Pre & Post Treatment Tips

Here are a few pre and post-treatment measures that may help you avoid unnecessary bruising, lumps and bumps before and after your cosmetic injection appointment. Although it is always possible that you might bruise or get temporary red spots or bumps, there are some tips that can have a big effect on treatments like Dysport, and dermal fillers like Sculptra, Restylane, Perlane and Juvederm.

First, if you bruise easily, it is always best to avoid planning any important work or social events for 2-7 days after treatments. Most bruises can be covered fairly well with make-up and we recommend a concealer palette by Sonia Kashuk (available at Target) It is a palette with 4 different skin tones to make the camouflage seamless. ) Another recommendation is Maybelline's Superstay 24 hour concealer (CVS).

If you have an extremely important event like a wedding or a reunion, Dr Epstein recommends having fillers done 3 weeks before the “special day”, as sometimes bruises can last for up to 14 days.

If possible, you should avoid the following medications for seven days before treatment:

  • Aspirin

  • Excedrin

  • Ibuprofen (Motrin, Aleve, Advil)

  • St. John’s Wart

  • Omega 3 fatty acids

  • Vitamin E

  • Ginko Bilboa

  • Ginseng

Before making any changes to your usual protocol, especially if you are pregnant, please check with your physician. Some of these drugs can make your blood (“thinner”) less likely to clot, which can cause bruising. If you are on Warfarin/Coumadin or Plavix, please do not discontinue unless by your physicians instruction.

A homeopathic remedy, Arnica, is available as an oral tablet (30C) and in a topical gel that can be helpful both before and after your injection treatment. Start tablets three days before your treatment with 3 pellets under the tongue 5 times a day and continue until 5 days after your treatment. As soon as possible, topical application of Arnica gel is also recommended to treat any areas of discoloration or swelling (How many times a day?).

For post-treatment swelling, there are three post-treatments that work well.

  • Cold tea bags

  • Warm (NOT HOT!) baked potato. Slice it in half and press gently on the treated area.

  • Arnica

Please be sure to follow any specific instructions we’ve discussed and feel free to ask questions before the day of your procedure.
